Feng Shui is the art and science of decorating (and organizing) a home to maximize its positive energy. While there are several principles that are followed in Feng Shui, there are some main techniques that are followed through the several variations.

  1. Your entryway should be inviting –

to people and positive energy! Your entryway is the opening of your home so it is natural that it is a main focus of Feng Shui. You want to let the good vibes in and start things on the right foot, so much care is given to entrances. Some “do’s” are beautiful adorned rugs, small tables with a vase full of florals and stunning artwork to welcome the energy in! It is important to note that adding a mirror opposite the front door is said to reflect good energy back out of the home, however!

  2. Living rooms should be uncluttered – Cary Interior Design

and have a natural flow. Furniture should be positioned in such a way that it is easy to navigate a room, promoting the flow of good energy. Any clutter restricts the positive flow of energy and anything broken or related to an unhappy memory should be thrown out. This will help promote further calmness and relaxation.

  3. Incorporate water where you can.

Water represents abundance, prosperity and can also add to your creative energy. Small fountains, fish tanks or even mirrors could be nice additions!

  4. Use color psychology to your advantage.

This is a big part of interior decorating, even more so for Feng Shui! It’s a great way to incorporate the five elements (a must!) through color representation. Green is reminiscent of nature, reflecting life and hope; red can symbolize luck and energy!

  5. Add plants and displays of fruit.

This also helps add to the positivity in your home. Colorful arrangements of flowers and fruit are thought to bring good luck (not to mention fertility!) and have a wonderful calming influence. Plants also improve the air quality in your home and promote mental health!

  6. Clearly designate work and relaxation spaces.

It may be nice to have a great view of your garden from your desk, but it can also be a distraction. Feng Shui believes you could take a “commanding position”, placing your desk in a way that lets you view the entire room. This is said to make you feel secure and in charge. Offices in living areas or bedrooms make it hard to disconnect from work when it’s time to relax.

  7. Avoid sharp lines and corners whenever possible.

Many believe sharp corners to have negative energy and represent danger. For that reason, Feng Shui leans toward rounded styles and it is an absolute “no-no” to have pointed corners positioned toward beds or chairs!

These are just starting points to decorating a home in the proper Feng Shui style, but as we said before, there are many schools of Feng Shui.
